Reserve for Dummies
#1331
On reserve, it could be 15-17 in a “bad” month. While that’s not typical, it’s tough to forecast the long-term. I bid reserve by choice, am a Captain at about 65-70% (but fairly senior on reserve), and average 11 days of work a month. There are ways as a line holder to work similar for a ‘normal’ month
Keep in mind, hiring is about to slow, and with it, Captain upgrades will also slow. Not trying to talk you out of it, just want to be fully honest about the future. Of course, living in NJ, you have more options and prospects if you are based in NYC.
Good luck. Get lots of opinions, especially if you can chat in person.

The AE memo that came out today revised hiring guidance to say that we plan on hiring 200 per month until next summer. I believe that’s the 2nd or 3rd time they have delayed the planned slow down in hiring to more “traditional rates” (100 or so a month is what I think it was planned to be once we slowed).

I would also point out the number touted by Flight Ops senior management at several base visits in the last 10 days has been 1700ish for the year, and 1300ish in the years following (no particular end date). I have not seen any detail/granularity to that number anywhere, but I might have missed it. So even if they hire 200/month in the beginning of the year, that weighting could still be consistent with their disclosed plan, if they slow as we get to summer (which they almost certainly will). We can't really tell from today's AE memo comments if there is a broader shift in hiring, or not, IMO.

The context of the the post was to a prospective NH though. By the time such a person can apply, interview, and start, hiring will absolutely have slowed.

Only Siths and Senior VPs of Flight Ops deal in absolutes

But when you consider prospects for upgrading to Captain for someone who has not yet even applied, that’s a whole other story, wouldn’t you agree?

Actually, I think we can. But you disagree and that’s okay. I don’t remember there being talk for over a year of slashing to a new norm of ~110/month. Maybe I’m having early onset dementia.

Regardless, I’m a bit more bullish than you I guess, but I just haven’t seen anything that leads me to believe they won’t extend that plan again. If demand is there, we aren’t going to slow IMO.

IVD Strategy
Would putting 2 IVD's on day 2 and 3 of a 5 day reserve block (NB) be a good strategy to hopefully turn it into 5 days "off"?
I read that for the day prior to an IVD (first day of reserve block), the pilot will be last for a SC conversion (I commute).
Also, from what I understand, they cannot assign anything before 6pm on day 4 after a vacation day, which will hopefully further limit my usefulness for day 4 and 5. Thoughts? Not many locals in open time. Would an APD used in this manner be identical (besides the payout)? Thanks.

APD does not have the same 6pm as “first assignment time after” rule that IVD does.
