New Hire Class Drops

I agree, and I don’t doubt he will.
I was hired and was in indoc during my first AE. Was told by many in training “no way you won’t get out of NY on this bid”. I tried to bid out of NY and missed it by about 5 people. Ended up spending an extra 5 months in NY, which turned out to be over a year total commuting to NY (my commute there wasn’t easy…yes I know it’s a choice).
I’m more pointing out that there is a lot to consider. I’m looking at this thread through the lens of a new hire lurker. Just want to make sure all the info is out there for folks to make the best decision. New guys may not understand the AE process and know it could take 7 months (for this AE) for you to actually convert.
And more importantly, nothing is guaranteed. With what happened during the MOAB, subsequent AEs, etc. movements aren’t exactly as predictable as in years past. Lots of folks sat out the last AE to see where their seniority would end up. Lots of guys got parked in NY coming off UNA. Many may bid out, and you’ll be stuck holding the NY bag.

A huge positive for ppl contemplating the 717 is the fact there is only 2 bases and most likely going down to 1 base, ATL. For junior folks, you are only covering a limited amount of trips. On the other aircraft you can and will be called out for trips all around the system. Your life on the 717 will be very consistent and better able to plan your reserve days.

I would’ve said yes until the AE came out with more DTW 717 positions than ATL 717. Now I think it’s a wash. Doesn’t look like they plan on closing it down in the near term. Eventually yes, they will close the category. But I doubt it will be in the next few years.
You’ll probably make it to DTW faster in the 717 than the 737/320, depending on your timing and how the AEs shake out.
