Just a guess, but it's gotta be easier when you've got a plane with a flow time or numbers issue or whatever else that they need a few minutes before being ready to just have them roll long to LA instead of everyone planning on LA then needing to use LC because the plane is sitting at LA, or the plane holds at LC and everyone has to taxi around them to get to LA.

So on the subject of SS# and drop...
There is an often used acronym BWYW, WWYB. "Bid What You Want, Want What You Bid." (I know, I know, EVERYONE knows this, but I state it for those who don't)
With the new process being put together your preference list and 'find out on day 1', look over your options and BWYW, WWYB.
Personal experience: SS# 04XX (Plug of my class, plug of the airline) I got 7ER (my dream plane). Converted to base of my choice in less than a year (back when the 7ER was in my base).
Bidding is an emotional process. Never assume that there is any logic in the system and never assume you can 'game' the system. You can strategize all you want, but make sure when all is said and done that you prioritize your 'wants' and know that, worst case, you might get something less-than-desirable and will need to hang out for a bit.

The airfield works well enough, but I hate the concourse layout at ATL. Narrow, congested concourses with gates on both sides, the chaotic center core of each concourse, and the fact that there are only two places for passengers to enter/exit make it appear perpetually more congested than it needs to be.

What's wrong with ATL? It's so easy to fly in and out of there. Almost as easy as MSP but without the constant runway changes.
NYC on the other hand is the one place I've ever taxied for 3 hours, the controllers are perpetually angry and they love making you go fast, then slow you down, then immediately get mad at you for not slowing down fast enough.

Anyone remember the flaps 0 “increased performance” DC-9/MadDog takeoffs? Heavy widebody?
Runway behind you and all that…mostly curious because I had a new FO ask why the other day and I wasn’t quick enough to make something up on the fly.

If only they would use the correct, FAA-approved terminology. "27R Lima Charlie."
