Which part do you want elaboration on?
People got caught flat footed the last AE because many people didn’t but bids in for positions that were not directly offered on the AE, but opened up due to people bidding out leaving many new positions opened up. Most famously was DTW 350B being available for new hires possibly because eligible bidders just didn’t have it on their bid because those spots weren’t listed on the AE posting.
Basically, bid whatever you want to do. Maybe you’ll get it, maybe you won’t. In the end, as was said on another thread, you won’t get anything if you don’t bid for it, so take those shots.

Um, what’s exactly do I need to apologize for? I’m just trying to answer the guy’s questions…

Just to understand the AE process, say there are no NYC 7ER on an AE, but for whatever reason 100 NYC 7ER As bid off, then a bunch of people might get awarded NYC ER A if they had jt in because they had an unexpected exodus from the category? These are “backfills”?

7ER A bids 350A
737A bids 7ERA
330B bids 737A (and instantly regrets it)
717A bids 330B
320B bids 717A
Some recent hire NYC 320B gets 320B in a better base
Vacated NYC 320B gets offered to future new hires.
There are tons of second order effect like this chain where 1 spot open at the top gives many people the chance. My example doesn't even include people just transferring bases from say NYC 330 - ATL 330.

What’s obvious to some is most certainly not obvious to others.
At the same time, sometimes a quoted response is directed at the original poster and may not be tailored for new hires through retirees.

The flat footed part I mean is pilots complaining that they missed out on a seat because they didn't know to have a bid in so some junior pilot got "their" sear. The same complaint seems to surface every AE
