If you are switching Aircraft AND base, then the first conversions of the posted AE must be after your 12 month anniversary. Normally the first conversions will be the first bid period after the AE is posted. So if you are hired Oct 4 2022, and a bid next year closes where conversions begin Oct 1 2023, you will not be eligible to break your seat lock, you will have to wait until the next AE. And once you get an award most AE's have 9 months to actually train and convert you, so theoretically under a worst case scenario you could just miss an AE at 11 months, have to wait until say 15 months to bid, and end up converting where you want to go at 24 months. There is no real way to control or predict any of those variables.

Having said all that, the company can, at it's own discretion, give a new award to a seat-locked pilot. It's not super common, and really dependent on where the company is hurting the most staffing-wise, but even if you are under a seat lock you can submit a bid for whatever you want and cross your fingers that the company awards it. A seat lock does not prevent you from bidding, it just means the company doesn't have to honor your bid.

I’ve been scouring the threads but haven’t found an answer. I recently received a CJO at UAL and DL and I’m trying to weight my options. I live in NE PA and plan on commuting to either airline. Newark is by far easier to commute. NYC co domiciles with JFK, LGA, EWR. Is it possible to hold a line just out of EWR? Other than 73n and 220, what other airframes operate out of EWR? TIA

Yes, but not on the 220. 320 and 73N.

However, it’s seniority dependent AND marketing dependent. DL changes month to month how much EWR flying on each airframe. Six months ago I was told the 73N was the plane for EWR and the 320 doesn’t do much. Looking at the pairings it doesn’t seem that way anymore.

If you’re in NE PA (I’m also in PA, but near PHL) than UAL is a clear winner. EWR is a huge AND junior base, with all airframes. And UAL hasn’t hired nearly as many pilots as DL in the last 10 years, and they have a much more robust widebody fleet (great except when international goes to zero/COVID).

Trying to plan a career at Delta by which aircraft will serve EWR is a fools errand at best. If EWR is a much better commute than JFK, I'd choose UAL in a hot minute as you'll have access to NB and WB flying all at one base. You'd have to be at Delta for a few years before you'd even have the bidding power to sharpshoot EWR trips vs immediately, and forever at UAL.

But since NYC is the most junior base, you’ll likely have no issue getting it. In the 9/13 class 5 of the bottom 10 got either NYC 73N or NYC 320.
If the 717 is not available in NYC his seat lock would only be 1 year.

Anyone have any advice on initial bidding? Should you bid for base over equipment or equipment over base?
