Don't forget saving serious money paying newhire rate vs 5 or 6 year senior FO rate

I agree. The MD was good because it allowed more fleet type to train folks on. If they can get a sprinkle of NHs to 330/350 now and again, that basically allows some load to be shared across every single fleet. No sim left unused.

My SS is really low. It's in the hundreds...i.e. it starts with a zero. My goal is to be NYC-based. I know there are many variables at play, but can anyone speculate on if I'd be able to get NYC? Are there other bases/aircraft that are generally less desirable than NYC so that the most junior guy (...likely me...) could get it?

If I got, for example, a DTW 717, can anyone estimate how long to change to NYC? Thanks

It may have happened, but since we've gone to the new drop system where there aren't a set number of any given base/fleet positions, I have yet to hear of a pilot who wanted NYC who was not able to hold it. You may not necessarily get your first or second choice of aircraft, but if you want NYC as your only priority I see no reason why you will not get it.

If you can't get NYC initially, at least try to get a plane that has a base in NYC...220, 320, 73N, 7ER. That way you can at least attempt to transfer bases on the first AE. The 717 isn't based in NYC so that would be the least desirable jet for you.

Here's the deal, every class is different, both in options available and preferences within the class. My class the plugs got SEA220 and they all wanted ATL, so NYC would have been better for them.

Generally speaking people choose base first, equipment second. If you get stuck with something like the 320 or 73N you'll be able to bid and very likely get NYC once the next AE comes out. If you get something like DTW717 (not available in NYC) then you will have to wait for an AE after a year before you can use your new hire exemption to break seat lock to bid something else available in NYC.

You will be seat locked for 2 years after your initial category assignment. If you were assigned to DTW 717, you wouldn’t be able to transfer to NYC, since that aircraft is only in DTW and ATL.

But since NYC is the most junior base, you’ll likely have no issue getting it. In the 9/13 class 5 of the bottom 10 got either NYC 73N or NYC 320.

I believe it’s only 1 year if you change aircraft to get a base you want. Since the 717 isn’t in NYC, you could change categories after only 1 year

The standard lock is two years. If you can’t hold the aircraft you are on in the base you want, for seniority reason or if the aircraft isn’t in the desired base, you can be awarded an aircraft in the base you want after one year. You would just carry your remaining seat lock and add it to the new 2 year lock.

Crazy part is, if the recent past stays the same, a DTW 717 who wants New York could take an upgrade and potentially move sooner than one year since an initial A bid is not blocked by a seat lock.
