Tennisguru summarized things nicely. At this point the only reasons I can think of to bid 73/320 are the extra pay and better variety of flying. But that variety of flying is also what allows the optimizer to almost completely eliminate credit from most trips by building some really brutal days. It is very common to see 8+ hour block and 12+ hour duty days on the 73/320, but barring major delays you will never see that on the 717. Plus, like he pointed out, oftentimes those smaller city regional-style overnights that the 717 does are more enjoyable than the big city overnights. Usually the van ride is shorter, the people are more normal, and the food and beer are cheaper.
I'm currently a 73 FO and have always been opposed to the multiple short leg trips on the 717, but lately they are starting to look a lot more appealing than the marathon days I have been doing. A 717A bid may be in my future in the Aug AE.

Also, the pay difference is $0 the first year as all fleets pay the same intro rate. After that it goes to about $15 and starts increasing by ~1 dollar per year of longevity and at year 12 the difference is $21. Now as the Airbus fleet grows with the 321 Neos you've got growing potential to make more on that fleet. That's basically $5 more than the 737-900 at all longevity steps, so about $21-22 more than the 717 during your first few years on the list.

Upgrade to the 737/320/717 in ATL is pretty neck-and-neck over the past couple of AEs. Obviously you could hold the 737/320/220 in NYC much faster. DTW 717A falls in the middle.

Random question, but figured this might be the best thread to get it answered (trying to plan ahead). Historically, what's the Holiday Indoc schedule look like? I.e. is mid Dec the last Indoc class to start, so everyone is complete by Christmas before starting up again the first week of Jan, or does Delta keep classing people up straight through? And are sims running every day through the Holidays or do they take certain days/weeks off? Thanks in advance!

not sure how fast you plan on upgrading, but if you upgrade before the 3 year mark (or before 1,000 hours at DL) you need a full course regardless

I avoided holiday sims so no idea there. They normally run 7 days a week 5a-1259a. Normal schedule is 5 days on and 2 off.

Random answer… traditionally, the company has skipped a class in late December to create a bolter hole in the pattern over Christmas and New Year’s Day for indoc.
The simulator schedule, on the other hand, runs almost non stop. They might shut down on Christmas Day and maybe new year’s, but that’s about it. The shut down period has gotten shorter each of the last few years. I had a sim on thanksgiving day this past year.
Right now, hiring is only limited by training capacity. There are some variations on the fleets, but essentially it boils down to that.
