Wait, what? Planning ahead to push back a class date that you don’t have yet, and won’t even have on the day you may get a CJO?

…were you less than honest about your availability date? Or is there some other (hopefully legitimate) factor driving this very unusual line of questioning?

Before someone makes a comment on how small it is, it’s worth remembering that the first class of the month also includes 20 flows who already received their aircraft assignment.

We found out our newborn son has a blood disease in the last month, we we need some time to sort him out with permanent child care. Yes I am aware that I don't have a CJO, however my thinking was to at least have some type of plan IF I did get one. I will just email pilot selection to see what they think. Thank you anyway.

First off, sorry to hear that, I hope your son is getting the treatment and care that he needs.

In this circumstance, I think they would work with you. If you just weren’t upfront about your actual availability, they’d be less than happy. It just got my spidey senses tingling, because I’ve known guys that were let go over fudging their availability dates (military dudes), and it’s something you don’t want to mess with.

When I interviewed 5+ years ago, we had to sign/initial something that stated we had one shot....if we turned down the Indoc date when offered, there would not be another.

Having said that, they are not robots. you have major life event already planned like your wedding, birth of kiddo, they will 100% work with you.

At the end of the HR interview, they will ask you to confirm (and initial) that the date of availability on your app is correct....I would probably bring up your life issue at that time.

I would agree

I'll say one thing for the hiring folks, they are very willing to work with you.

Just be honest and upfront with them

I would advise focusing only on the interview during the interview. The timeline from interview to indoc for me this fall was roughly 5 weeks, and I imagine that timeline is growing as the hiring grows. After 2 weeks of indoc, it was another month for me until IQ. When you get an invite to indoc, you get a survey that will ask you if you can be available for roughly 90 days without major breaks, and if not, to call someone at Fleet Common Programs. The vibe I got is that they will absolutely work with you, especially in your instance with the health of your child in the conversation. First thing is first though, get that CJO!

+1 to those saying they will work with you. Just be honest and upfront. This is exactly the kind of thing for which accommodations are made. Best of luck to you and your son. I pray his treatment goes well.
