New Hire Class Drops
#1021
I don't have any info on that one yet, because I have no connection to the training department, I just count after seeing the pictures ALPA put out in their emails and the company on DeltaBook.

With class 12-21, we've had 649 hired this year. 162 in Oct, 193 in Nov, and 76 in Dec. If the 28th is the biggest class of the year, it'll have to be at least 59 pilots, putting the total this year north of 708.
For those that care about such things, a whopping 21 of the 617 pilots hired through class 20-21 are female, half of which were in the last two classes. Better yet, only 8 are black. Greater than 91.5% of all new hires this year are white men. Diversity indeed.

And 99% of bricklayers are males. Construction, nursing, teaching, pro sports teams are all skewed one way or another. Certain demographics are over/underrepresented in all sorts of professions.
What's wrong with letting people choose their own path?

I don’t think it did. I think the 20 withheld flows that started 12/7 were in addition to the drop of 26 posted here

The whole thing is so silly though. It only helps the regional one time at the beginning of a wave, yet shaves off 3 months of "first year pay" for all the flows forever. Maybe we should just contractually reduce first year pay to 9 months for everyone.

I thought that after 90 days past the first class in a hiring wave, every month would have an aprox. equal number of bypassed flows still at a regional and post bypass flows finally showing up.

From what I was told, flows bid their aircraft separately from the rest of their class, so drops posted here do not include them because they bid their aircraft at a different time.

I have no problem with the withhold thing, although I agree it is kinda pointless in its current form. It makes sense for certain positions (LCA, sim instructors) but just all pilots…not sure it’s helping.

Thank you
As you have noticed and as others have mentioned, you will get relative seniority faster there. At least for a while. As soon as you do start getting some seniority though (because people above you are bidding out ASAP) you will find that people below you are then also bidding out ASAP. And as you go up the list, the rate of bidding out decreases.
You will also need more seniority (especially as a commuter, but even as a "local" aka also a commuter but by car in most cases) because the domestic trips there are especially bad. Early report, late release, 3 airports to cover. No matter where you are on the reserve lists, you're always number 1 for something so you better always be ready.
NYC used to be a commuter's paradise even for relatively junior domestic. Then came the uncontrollable wildfires of the "optimizer" and its been scorched earth ever since.
The ER, even after it became a single category with 767 domestic, used to be significantly better almost all the time. Now its barely better some of the time.
All that said, if you have a flexibile mentality and can "roll with it" you'll be fine there and will at least sometimes notice your faster seniority bump. If you become a contract ninja, glued to your phone, on top of that flexible mentality, you'll actually be able to make some lemonade once in a while. And by the time you realize you can't take it anymore, you'll be able to bid out anyway.

Thank you for explaining all that! Was curious about the pros and cons of NYC since it seems to be rather junior these days. Appreciate you taking the time to write that all out.
