LOA 20-04 MEC approves counter

I actually missed a trip because my Miata got stuck in the snow. I planned on leaving the house at 6AM, and didn't see that it was snowing since it was still dark. Turning out of the parking garage onto the unplowed road, I spun an extra 90 degrees.
Actually, that just proves the Miata is the best car... I didn't have to do the trip

I’m not in that group. I voted for it. Just pointing out what I viewed as a bit of a bait and switch.

It seemed logical to me that you can’t book a seat that doesn’t exist (because it’s taken). Expecting the company to just bump paying customers at a commuters discretion doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.
If you can’t book the seat and you notify the company and they make the decision to bump a paying customer that’s one thing, but to just assume that it will always happen no matter what seems a bit far fetched.
But maybe my interpretation is the one that’s off. I don’t know the book definition of ‘positive space’ (if there is one).

I find it odd that you expected to be able to book any flight willy nilly whether it was full or not.

Good to hear it but it was not a bait and switch. Since at least the 1990s a seat had to be available to book PS - nothing changed. If anyone was under the impression that passengers would be bumped then that is on them.
You also said “the value was about zero.”
Well the backup flight was eliminated - very valuable.
We can now book PS home - very, very valuable.
We can book PS on RJs - very, very valuable.
We can book the whole month as soon as our schedules are released - very valuable.
I am at a loss as to how anyone can think the PS commute is of no value. It virtually eliminates all stress from commuting which was one of the biggest negatives of commuting.

Agreed on all points. Sorry my somewhat tongue in cheek comment caused so much heartburn. I especially hadn’t considered how it does put you ahead of more senior non rev employees vying for a seat.
I’ve been here six years now. Been on reserve well over four of those six years. So I think I’m looking at commuting to work from a different perspective than some here. (I also drive to work. I’ve commuted at other jobs, but not at DL.) For a line holder booking weeks ahead of time it’s much easier. With the current state of affairs though, I would guess probably two thirds of active pilots are sitting reserve right now.
So, the examples I’m thinking of would involve booking within 24 hours of report time. Assume a FL to NYC commute. A lot of FL cities have been pared down to 2 flights per day. Many times a reserve assignment can then leave you with only one flight option between the time you are assigned and report time. If that flight is already booked to capacity, what now? Jump seat obviously if available, two leg connection etc. But when you get these situations with holiday travel and/or weather systems impacting the hub, I think there will be cases guys may still get pinched. Especially if the company takes a hard line on the recently published policy. If they are going to be flexible and book you above the Company Business seats available cap, why publish what they did?

I can see how a local pilot driving her Miata to work would be pi$$ed.
