If he is like my close friend, also an attorney, he absolutely thrives on this, is Type A, and sadistically loves his work. He is never off largely by choice, if you cornered him and asked him.

At least they're getting paid for it. There are a lot of jobs out there that live the same life and don't make anywhere near as much.

In my opinion, flying as a career gets better over time because the pay-to-work ratio becomes pretty reasonable. In a lot of professions, it stays pretty flat or maybe even gets progressively worse.

Shortly after Top Gun came out, some of the A-6 guys were wearing patches that said "fighter pilots make movies, attack pilots make history"
Then after Flight of the Intruder came out, some of the fighter guys had patches that said "fighter pilots make movies, attack pilots make really bad movies".
