Flying a lot of tax free missions to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Deployments too...I remember seriously considering whether I needed to spend $3 on some candy from the BX because it would drastically increase my weekly expenses.

Oh and not having children and holding on to the first wife.

Finally, driving Toyota trucks...very dependable.

Taking a voluntary furlough post 9/11. I was able to return to AD, save all my bonus and tax free deployment income, and retire with a pension/healthcare.

The biggest impact on my net career income was starting on Plan B as a new hire. I'd like to pass along a sincere Thank You! to all of the pilots hired in the 80s and 90s who told me this would happen. They didn't know the specifics, but they educated me on the cyclical nature of the business and warned me to be ready.
