Haha, that’s so gnarly Dude. I picture you looking like Bernie Sanders about to yell at the brats in the neighborhood to get off your lawn.

To his defense, 80 did you get the 320 off an AE or when you left the training department?

Are those the same rings FTB sells in his garage?

I think most pilots understand the big picture of what it means, kinda like they understand what being awarded a position "out of seniority" means. My non-pilot wife understands what "out of seniority" means and what "can hold" means

Not trying to be snarky(please don't take it that way), ....it just seems these two terms irk you and you don't understand why some pilots don't see it your way. I think you can start a Wikipedia page and put your "universal definition" up and pilots the world over can help modify and craft the definition to support your/my thoughts about both terms since you keep asking "why".
None of this irks me. If my logic irks you, you and Gunfighter can rest easy knowing you needn't adopt it as your own.

If I can't infer the specific reason/interest for one's question "can I hold XYX?", I generally need to know more to provide helpful information. The asker often wants to know one or more things with that question and the answer to each can be different:

1. Am I senior to the plug?
2. Is it likely (or what is the likelihood) that I can be awarded that category (and when)?
3. Is it likely (or what is the likelihood) that I will be displaced from my category (and when)?

I can be junior to the plug and not be awarded a category for months or years.

I can be junior to the plug and have a high likelihood of being awarded a category.

I can be well above the plug and be MD'd.

I can be above the plug and be safe from displacement.

The question and the answer each seem to have some nuance.

Because it would be useless as an indicator of seniority. As has been pointed out if there are no LAX 73NA openings and a XX seniority wants it does that mean a double digit seniority can’t hold it when it goes down to seniority number 10,000? How useful would that be when describing relative seniority? Answer - totally worthless.

Got to agree with Buck here, there is a big difference in what you can hold and what is awarded on any given AE.

OBTW this goes back to Orville and Wilbur when with the loss of a coin toss Wilbur was heard to mutter “ I built the flyer and now I can’t even hold it out of Kitty Hawk.”

To which Orville responded, “Bid NYC, if you to hold the Flyer.”

Ok. But what if that's not why I'm asking?

My wife wants to know if I will go ahead and upgrade already to WB captain. She cares not if I'm senior to people who already do...she cares if I can go make more money. If I thought I wouldn't get that upgrade for another year or two (despite someone junior to me already being there, or being reinstated without me getting the award), I'd tell her I can't hold it yet.

But again... y'all needn't worry how we use the term in my family and I now appreciate I'm in the minority.

I went to the 330 after the schoolhouse (you can go to whatever you could have held on an AE during your time in department). Got 320A on the big 2017 AE.

That's easy. Just tell her you will make more money by staying senior in Junior equipment.

The answer to that question should be a definitive "no"! Answering "yes" could mean your budget is now WB A, even though you are not. IMHO, the smartest approach is to let her know you are a WB Captain AFTER the first paycheck in the new seat.
