Someone made the comment a while back that it doesn’t matter how junior a category is right now, if you don’t get it on the next AE then you can’t hold it.

I'm not sure why this isn't the universal definition. Not many people care what they "could have held", they care what they "can hold" (be awarded?).

I think most pilots understand the big picture of what it means, kinda like they understand what being awarded a position "out of seniority" means. My non-pilot wife understands what "out of seniority" means and what "can hold" means
Not trying to be snarky(please don't take it that way), ....it just seems these two terms irk you and you don't understand why some pilots don't see it your way. I think you can start a Wikipedia page and put your "universal definition" up and pilots the world over can help modify and craft the definition to support your/my thoughts about both terms since you keep asking "why".
