Thank you Baradium. Actually, that was one of my questions.
I have so many and try to figure out how things work.
Any base holds me for just one year? Not five or ten? (Picturing my family, commuting and crash pad.)
How about if I am seconded to the MD88 at Base XXX.
What happens if the MD gets eventually replaced by a Bus or Boeing?
Does DLA request me to change the base to an open MD position or would I get a respective type rating and stay at my base? How much time does DLA provide for a base change?
If based in NY, are you being scheduled to operate from all three airports?

Seat locks are two years, unless as a new hire the seat lock prevents you from moving bases (the aircraft you are in is not at the base you wish to move to) in which case it is one year.
I don't know what "seconded" means. If you are on reserve they can cut up and rebuild a trip from one base and assign to another in some scenarios....if that's what you meant? That doesn't change where you are based.
The 88 is only based in ATL now, and won't be closing for a few years. However, if you were ATL 88 and got booted from it ("displaced" is the term) you would go to whatever base/seat you bid for that your seniority could hold. In the case of a mandatory displacement there is no new seat lock. If you move of your own accord there is a two year seat lock.
The seat lock is for aircraft and base. Imagine NYC88 still being open and you getting booted. They could not force you to move to ATL88. Is that your question?
I don't know what you mean by "time for a base change." There are periodic bids to move bases/aircraft called "advanced entitlements" (AE). How often they occur seems to be a moving target. You bid what you want (and damn well better want what you bid) and get what you can hold. Training and actually switching bases occurs at some mystical timing.
The base is NYC, so yes you cover all three airports.
That help?

To add one little thing to Sputnik, if you get an AE/VD, your freeze begins on the award date not your conversion date. As he said, there is no freeze for an MD.
One other thing about a base such as NYC/LAX where there are multiple airports to cover. For reserve coverage, you only have to live within shortcall range of one of the airports to cover that requirement. This isn’t mandatory. You can always drive to get in range for the short call......or commute in.

For me days off are a top priority. Even as a brand new guy, I got 18 off a month at SW unless I picked up. I hardly sat any reserve as I traded it all for trips. 18+ off a month even in the summer. The days off and flexibity are the main draw for me at SW. I chose SW over a CJO at UAL and turned down a FDX interview after I was hired. I’m happy, but it suits my goals and needs. I think we each have a different idea of what we want from an airline career... for me it’s days off ASAP, lol. I actually LIKE the 737 and WB is not a desire, but that’s not the case for everyone.
For my own curiosity, how long to consistently hold 17-18 days off on any plane in ATL at DAL?

If I am not mistaken, there was a proposal in TA1 that would have - in effect - amounted to the same thing. But to reiterate, you would be in favor of NOT allowing any pilot to pick up a trip if said pilot were to be bought off of a trip for an OE.

This grand illusion that everyone can theoretically triple dip because a tiny fraction can is costing us all jobs and the company loves it.
Not to mention that we got that benefit back by throwing new hires under the bus (which also cost us jobs) but obvsly they need to shut up and pay them dues etc.
I get the emotional lure of sea lawyer "good deals" like this. Just like the pump and dump lump sump crowd played money ball for a year or three and punched out for life. Municipals will literally riot before they give that up and hey, why not, its free money.
For us though, there's a cost to these kinds of things. I wouldn't just give it away for justice etc. But why should we pay (and we do) for a massive benefit for a tiny few when the entire group is still lacking across the board?
Of course triple dip tricks are supposedly the reason why everyone rockets swiftly up the list to hold 7 figure 350 hedge fund baller gigs.
If you get bought off, full pay and no obligation, I'm fine with that being enough.
