Vacation

Crew scheduling has since early summer been violating the contract repeatedly to cover trips. The one I have seen multiple times is improperly moving trips from base to base where they did not follow their own reserve only notation. Rumor has it our union scheduling section is in disarray and not doing the job it used to do to police things.
If this and the “emergency” short notice vacation cancellation to cover a trip are accurate, the Scheduling Committee and/or Contract Admin Committee had better be all over it like stink on $hit to end the practice.

I’m all for better vacation and quality of life in the next contract. But, I’m not buying that we deserve it because the job is so hard. This is the easiest GD job in the world for the money.
Any office job that pays even close to this kind of money probably comes with 60-70 hour weeks, a 24/7 tether to your bosses and a bunch of travel to boot. No thanks.
Even with a worst case 4 x 4 day month I’m still home at some point 22 days of that month. I’ve got more time with the family and free time than I’ve ever had I’m my life and I’m a junior NB guy.

My father in law retired from a C-level position. He said the higher he rose the more money he made and the easier the job got. He had more responsibility but the actual work was easier.
The OB that delivered my two kids goes in and knocks out natural deliveries, c-sections, high risk cases, and complications all in a days work. I guarantee he thinks his job is easy too. Do I? No, because I can’t do what he does.
Point being, experts in their field probably think their job is easy but they don’t tell others that thereby delvaluing their own worth or accept less because of it.
And after decades of breathing that PACK air catch up to you you’ll need all that time off just to feel normal again.

Paid APD would immediately affect all Pilots. An additional week would also be good but would affect guys over 25 years or so, depending on what we could negotiate.
Two paid days prior to your primary vacation would also benefit everyone and is also something we should look at.

Guys,
There are plenty of ways to improve our vacation since it is industry lagging. Our vacation has been slowly improving since its nadir in BK and continues to improve but the slow incremental nature of the improvements needs to be accelerated.
Another 15 minutes simply added to a vacation week aint gonna cut it in my opinion.
At least during this go around we follow UAL and it would be nice for another passenger Pilot group besides us to do some heavy lifting for the first time since 9-11.
Go UAL Pilots!

A friend of mine at SWA just texted me his schedule... to show how well he worked his week of vacation for Nov. He's at 40% in his base. He parleyed one week of vacation into touching two of his trips, so working 6 days in November. And not working Thanksgiving. He's getting paid 73 hours, (85 TFP), but he's got plenty of room to get more or better trips in the month.
<sigh> We need better vacation rules and vacation credit.
