AT&T with the iPhone. Anywhere in the world with a wi-fi signal (I use airplane mode to avoid roaming) and you get an indication 'ATT wifi'. IPhone will make and receive calls as if it is in the US (think voyage), and it's free. Seems like free wifi is nearly everywhere in Europe.

The $5 extra isn't LTE speed. It's 256kbps instead of 128kbps. Makes surfing the internet quite a bit less painful.
T-mobile has an unlimited plan for $70 tax included so with the $5 extra its $75 per month taxes included. Unlimited calling, text, and data.

We switched from Verizon to T-Mobile a few years ago and we're very pleased with it. Just to add a couple things...
1. You can borrow an iPhone for a week to test out the network. Just swing by a store or order it online. Then return to a store when done.
2. Wifi calling from abroad to the U.S. is free.
3. International data is sometimes faster than 3G, not sure if it's a fluke but we were getting 20 mbps in Amsterdam.
4. Canada and Mexico are full speed LTE unlimited and calling as if in the U.S.
5. Only use Verizon if your home town is in the sticks or you regularly visit the sticks. VPS had terrible coverage but other than that haven't had a problem on domestic overnights.

Verizon Int'l
I do a lot of international and have great success with Verizon's monthly Int'l plan. $40 a month for 100 minutes talk, 100 outgoing texts, 10MgB data and all incoming texts. It works everywhere I go except Ghana (have to go voice and data roaming). It's not unlimited, but I use Wifi mostly and use use the data when out of wifi range. I've only ever gone over my limits once, but that month included a week vacation in Europ.
When I tested T-Mobile, the domestic left a lot to be desired...and I don't live in the sticks. Rumor has it T-Mibile is working to improve it. But T-Mobile is great overseas.

I've noticed improvements in T-Mobile domestic coverage over the last 12 months. I now hold onto calls in areas that I previously dropped on both AT&T and T-Mobile. My wife's office is in an area with poor coverage, so they provided a plug in coverage device that gives 5 bars in a house sized area.

Great program and great service. Only downside is you need to own a latest gen Nexus or a Pixel.
