Yeah but just because a plane can do something doesn't mean it will do it. The whole "long and thin" white paper nonsense was predicting the 787 would not only take over the world, but totally and completely revolutionize the entire route map. Gone is the hub and spoke, for now everyone will be flying Boise to Kuala Lumpur direct, etc. ![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](https://www.airlinepilotforums.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
In the real world though, its mostly used like any other plane on mostly garden variety routes. While the flexibility to cherry pick the occasional oddball route may be nice, its mostly a plug and play airplane into the same matrix as all the rest, and that will absolutely be the destiny of the C Series as well.

Seriously you might be right and it might be an up/down, up/down airplane, but I doubt that will be the majority of the flying. jmho

I've always been disappointed we don't fly to more Caribbean destinations direct out of DTW. Not that I don't dig a 7- or 8-hour travel day connecting through ATL or NYC with kids...
Aruba, Bonaire, Turks and Caicos, Key West, St. XYZ x 5...all seem ripe for weekend C Series service at least. But maybe that's why I'm a pilot and not Network.
European offerings are pretty thin, too...

I think we all know that either NYC or lax will be the first base or bases but I believe dtw will be a base shortly after. There are a ton of md88/90 that fly out of dtw that will be replaced by a combination of c series/737/320
a route like dtw-Monterrey or Nassau comes to mind or even gdl

Look at all the snap basing decisions we've made so far. Its that overarching paradigm that drives the uncertainty, not the vast capabilities of an industry dominating plane and its faux-disruptive technologies. I think the C will do some cool routes. But only a few. The vast majority will be plug and play on existing routes to flex up or down because of the seat count. There's nothing fundamentally revolutionary about it.
As for holding it back to "test" its sea legs, I don't think that's a consideration at all. Perhaps for a month or two, but if marketing/the "optimizer"/etc. says it will make 2 cents more hopscotching all over the hemisphere (on mostly traditional routes) with no crew or MX support then that's what it will do.
