While it is clear the regional model is at an economical disadvantage, I can not see how the A220 is now or in the near future going to be replacing the 76 seat fleet. Currently there are approximately 344 large RJ's (69-76 seats) in Delta's fleet. From what I have read here in the forums and else where Delta will only be adding 50 of the 109 seat A220's to the fleet with the bulk of the A220's being in the 130 seat category. There is no current plan to reduce the large RJ fleet. From what we on the Junior Varsity Team (Endeavor) have been told over and over again is currently Delta has identified a market for around 150 (give or take) of the 50 seat aircraft and will continue with the current DCI fleet into the foreseeable future. Also, from what I have read the fuel burn at cruse for a CRJ900 (3600-4000LBS/HR) and an A220 are very close. Advantage to the A220 for the additional 33 seats. I do not know the answer to this question; how much does crew cost figure into the economics of an aircraft? Currently there is a $140/hour (Captain) pay difference between aircraft. Advantage CJR?
While many Delta pilots believe the A220 is a CRJ killer and "Scope Choke" will see the end of the US Regional model I do not see this happening anytime soon. Given the fact the Regional will be around for a long time I have 2 serious question for you guys which I do not know the answer.
1) Is there a market for a sub-100 seat aircraft in the US airline Fleet
2) If so who should fly those aircraft, Maine Line pilots or Regional Pilots?

All these routes are/were served by RJs and are now being served by the A220. Now you’re seeing 76 seat jets do things like Seattle to Victoria, BC and Vegas to San Jose...I agree RJs may not go away anytime soon, but your not going to continue to see these 3 hour flights on 76 seaters, large RJ cycles to smaller markets will increase, as mainline continues to upguage the domestic market with the continual increase in demand. Delta will need to get creative with RJ routes as the A220 comes online...things like LAS-SNA, LAS-SAN, LAS-SJC

Looks like the acquisition team in Paris ordered five more 220-100s (with the increased gross weight).

And I was so sure we were going to announce 100 MAX-8s at a bargain basement price. Wonder how lonely that Boeing kiosk is at LeBourget? 😁

A220 is replacing a lot of the RJ routes and shifting those RJs to smaller markets...Is that sustainable? Only time will tell...then there is the demand for pilots as well. Can Regionals keep up with hiring demands fighting over the same piece of pie?

The PW1500s in the interim need to stay out of trouble too.
