Default Political cost for mask mandates..

The previous Emerson/Nexstar poll from July 20 found support for the recall at 43% and opposition at 48%, and a new poll from the same group released Tuesday now shows support at 46% and opposition at 48%. The poll was conducted among 1,000 Californians from July 30 to Aug. 1.

What happened in two weeks' time that sent Newsom from an uncomfortable, but somewhat stable five percentage point advantage to a much more precarious two percentage point advantage? There's a good chance it's just noise (the poll's margin of error is plus or minus three percentage points), but if you're looking for a real-life event that could have shifted public opinion, such an event does exist.

The end-of-July news cycle was dominated by coverage of the spread of the delta variant of COVID-19, and 50% of California's population is now under an indoor mask mandate.
if Newsom goes down, mask mandates might quickly go down with him.

I believe this overreach of protocols and vaccines will flip many offices. Much of this is less about health and safety as it about trying to remind us who is really in control (or so they think) of our lives.

Newsome's situation is somewhat unique not in the mandates he passes down (which are applauded by the very large liberal population), but by his flagrant hypocrisy in defying his own orders.

it does not appear to be serving him well:

California’s recall laws are strange. If other prominent members of the same party run in the election it can guarantee success of the recall while dividing the party vote and causing the member of the opposing party who gets the most votes - even if far less than the person being recalled - to be elected. Newsome could get 48% of the vote and lose to someone gettin 18% in a badly divided case.

Amazing the amount of lies allowed in political ads. The anti recall ads in California say that the recall process is being “abused”. Uh what? The law says if you collect the required amount of signatures, a recall election is held.

Default It’s more general than just Newsom

https://www.studyfinds.org/covid-bur...st-government/

an excerpt:

People are fed up with COVID restrictions

Along with gauging how COVID is burdening the public’s daily lives, the team also asked participants to reveal how dissatisfied they are with their respective governments and if the frustration to causing them to attend protests or act violently.

Results reveal a strong connection between a higher psychological burden due to COVID-19 and people displaying more antigovernment sentiment and a tendency towards violence for political causes. To the researchers’ surprise, the survey did not find a link between COVID burden and motivation to attend peaceful demonstrations

We were also surprised to find that COVID-19 burden does not need additional triggers to motivate political violence,” Bartusevičius adds. “It is seemingly enough on its own.”
