Here is a good dilemma that will confuse a bunch from both sides.

Opening up the state is a plan from the pharma/healthcare industry, because they have more ICU capacity than ever before since this pandemic started.

My kid has been in person since September. In a district of 1000 staff and students they have had a whopping 4 confirmed cases. Yes,FOUR.

Florida has been open since august.

Zero deaths in kids or teachers directly linked to a case caught at school.

ZERO

Go back and read all of your studies - at a base level, with maybe more sophistication, that is exactly what they did.

I said it in response to a comment that COVID will never be eliminated, and that we shouldn’t use that as an excuse to not try our hardest to do just that.

That’s all I said, and you ran with it and blew it entirely out of proportion. I went on to speculate that, perhaps if people got covered in pustules when they got COVID like they did when they got Smallpox, they’d care more about it - even without a 30% death rate like Smallpox, I bet you’d care a lot more about COVID if it made you look like a living pimple. Everyone knows that Smallpox had a higher death rate. Admittedly, I could’ve written that part better so as to convey I wasn’t drawing any direct comparisons or ignoring the death rate, but I’m clarifying it now.

And please, spare me your righteous indignation. What’s truly absurd and blatantly ignorant is how you feel it’s appropriate for people to be outside without masks or social distancing right now. In a few decades, the history books will not look kindly on people who did not take COVID seriously.
So based on what you have written, would you feel it makes sense for WHO/CDC to marshal enough resources to undertake a massive 20 year elimination campaign against ugly facial acne? I mean, all we would have to do is shut down all the schools and businesses (not the essential ones, of course, like CBD stores) and then double the national debt again, maybe make it $12 trillion or so. It does meet the criteria for risk you postulate - "unattractive" is the big thing, right, because it sounds like the 30% death rate was not the deciding factor in eliminating smallpox, it was the zits.

I mean seriously - what is your justification for doing what we have done to the world (and to KEEP DOING IT) in order to get rid of COVID-19, a virus that has killed .1% of the population with or from COVID-19 (25% of which was over the age of 85 and 80% of which was over the age of 65)?

This is the first serious pandemic in 100 years—Spanish flu—515,000 deaths over 100 years is only 5,150 per year. It just happened all at once.

oh, by the way, yes we eliminated smallpox—only took 200 plus years. George Washington was vaccinating his troops. And, over a million children in Africa did of malaria each year and have been since we outlawed a cheap fix—DDT. The West’s sentimental love of Rachel Carson has cost millions their lives.
