I’d generally agree that more active leadership would have gotten better public buy-in.
HOWEVER
In Feb and March, Fauci and the SG both publicly said healthy people don’t need to wear masks. In early April, they changed their minds and guidance.
Freely acknowledging POTUS support from THAT POINT would have helped...
Don’t you think that change in position damaged the public credibility of public health officials, especially given the parallels you have made to SARS and masks as a historical mitigation tool?
This thing ain’t seasonal flu - its less severe for children (even with vaccine and Tamiflu) and MUCH worse for the 65+ demographic which makes up 78%+ of COVID deaths despite being less than 15% of confirmed positive cases.
Either way it is now late October not April, and as much as masks suck they’re a low-cost, low-risk mitigation strategy for indoor public spaces.

If you man up, and say "Hey, this virus (Novel) is kinda different from the others, so we got it slightly wrong, but we're correcting and moving forward", and then POTUS threw his weight behind that, all would've been forgiven. But POTUS has been actively going against the Public Health grain, which has been like course sandpaper on cheese on the reputation of our public health officials.

Maybe, but here's the thing about America.... We love the idea of redemption:

Surely you remember that? I’m also sure we would find your posts calling both of them out about it at the time, and you obviously hold them, the “experts”, accountable for intentionally misleading the public. How many lives could have been saved had Fauci not intentionally lied to us?

He said this in February. These are tape recorded interviews with Bob Woodward.

He was talking about Fauci and the Director of the CDC, who told the American public NOT to wear masks. Going as far as saying it would increase your chance of infection. Then, when they advocated masks, justified the change by telling us nothing changed, they were intentionally misleading us in the beginning.

Word on the street is that initially they were trying to prevent a run on masks, that would've lead to a shortage, that would've adversely affected those who needed them most in the early days. Also remember, they were initially unsure about how to comprehensively respond to this novel Corona virus. So maybe they had some missteps/maybe they didnt because they never changed their position in the need for social distancing, washing of hands, don't touch your face, etc.
But all that doesn't matter. The fact is, once they knew more, they pivoted and started to preach the importance of masks, but POTUS in his political calculation, decided that he wasn't going to get on board.
That I think was his fatal mistake.

I too was also talking about Fauci and the CDC director. You may not have noticed it, but I had highlighted the part about public health officials, in responding.

We know that societally we have become increasingly siloed, so I don't think it was an unreasonable point to make.
The "tone" of his response to when I said the POTUS was on record saying the virus is nasty, led me to believe that he doesn't watch the "lame stream" media. lol
There was wall to wall coverage in the playing of excerpts of POTUS musings on CNN, MSNBC, NBC, CBS, ABC, etc. Interestingly FOX and outlets on the other divide gave it little to no coverage.
For anyone who is taking in news to somehow miss those 2 weeks of revelations, it suggests to me that they get their news primarily, if not exclusively from a conservative perspective.
I'm saying, check out the other perspective every now and again.

The difference is the motives and whether any lessons were learned:
They pivoted.
He didn't. And still hasn't.
They did it from a "mange the situation given what we know" perspective.
He did it for purely, selfish political reasons.
One is forgivable
The other isn't.
The buck stops with POTUS.
