The navy has had one active duty death to Covid. It's only a readiness issue because we've drastically over-reacted and hamstrung ourselves at every opportunity. This is my shocked face that the military turned a non-event for service members into a football bat.
Commands can threaten to not approve your leave, but you always have the prerogative to 1. Request mast 2. Request a denial, in writing 3. Get a JAG/IG involved.
No skipper who likes bands at changes of command wants an IG microscope shoved up their a-hole.

It's a readiness issue because society has made it so. If we had a real war pop up, covid would quickly become irrelevant to the mil, but in the meantime...

Yeah. I'm sure the VA will also say i got covid because I'm "fat" and not service connect it if I ever have long term issues with it.
But yeah. Navy has been doing the 'you got the rona, but we're going to send you to training anyways' for over 2 months.

Vatican mandates vaccines for employees (who want to stay employed). You can do that kind of thing when you're a sovereign country with no electorate.

1. Covid becomes endemic and current vaccines only provide protection for a limited duration. My informed guess is 2-3 years, but hopefully longer.
2. Covid successfully mutates around an existing vaccine(s) and you need an updated booster to address the mutation.
"Mutation around an existing vaccine" is not likely to be an absolute, ie existing immunity (vaccine or natural) will still provide some protection. Also mutation around one particular vaccine does not necessarily get around all vaccines.
