I think Wut's question about how many deaths are acceptable is a fair one. My honest answer is, I don't know what the number is. What I've learned from this experience is that it's hard to have a sense of what the numbers mean in a diverse country like the United States with 340 million people, let alone the entire world.

What I do know is that we are 3 months into this thing (really longer, based on data that's coming out), with over 100,000 dead, and I still do not know anybody personally who has tested positive, had a positive antibody test, has been hospitalized, or has died. I've heard literally a couple of secondhand stories (meaning roughly two), but that's it. I know at my airline of roughly 25,000 employees, no one has died (yet), and I haven't heard of anyone getting seriously ill from it. I get emails from church groups that are a non-stop hit parade of illness and death in the world, and there hasn't even been one covid hospitalization or death mentioned in them. I'm not in any way saying this is a hoax or that none of the deaths have occurred, but it seems to me that population-wide numbers can sound pretty bad without even showing up in most people's reality.

Feel free to continue debating the numbers, but also realize that most people don't study the numbers and will reach a conclusion based on their observation of what's going on around them. I don't believe that they are stupid or ignorant for doing so.

How nice. I know 2 people that have died from it. I know about a dozen or so that have gotten ill from it. Most say it's the worst illness they've ever had.

I have a feeling that by the time this over, more people will have stories like mine than yours.

That's quite literally a statistical impossibility.

Real easy to dismiss everything when you live in BFE.

Early estimations by the AHA had the United States at 96 million infected and 480,000 dead. I'd say we're right on track for that projection. If we hit those numbers, everyone will know someone that had it. And most will know someone who died.

You may have missed my earlier post - but there are 124 counties in the great state of Texas that have not had a single Covid death - comorbidity or otherwise. Holistically urging the entire state to stay home is nonsensical.

Actually, I’m not THAT olds it’s old fart. And I APPARENTLY had it back in April. Assuming the test wasn’t a false positive.

But let me ask YOU a question:

Since there is no guarantee we will EVER get an effective vaccine for COVID 19, how long would you maintain this economy destroying lockdown before you said it is time to end it?

The virus is going to spread there too. It went from NYC and other large cities to smaller areas all over the US now. Most of the smaller cities like in Washington have started to ship patients to bigger hospitals around the state as they’re full. If people listened they wouldn’t have to shut it down.

There are more than 300,000,000 people in this country. Why don't ya run some numbers and let me know how many people would have to die for the majority of people to know someone who died of Covid - much less two, which was your initial claim.

I'll wait right here.

I am unconcerned. I am exponentially more likely to die on my way to work tomorrow than I am of even contracting Covid. I'll take my chances, and you and Meemaw can hide under the bed and wait for someone tell you you're allowed to come out.
