Excargodog and his tired "but the economy" rationalizing falls apart when you realize that lifting restrictions prematurely will make everything WORSE in the long run. Europe and Asia are almost through their outbreaks. They're all reopening in earnest. Meanwhile, travel bans to and from the United States will remain in place because we were too stupid to get a handle on our infection rates.
This isn’t over anywhere and certainly not in North or South America. Canada has nearly the same infection rate we do as does Mexico, Brazil even worse, at least to the extent that you can actually believe the statistics in these countries. And it has flared up again in China and is only building in India.

basically, there are only two possibilities, this burns itself out through herd immunity or it is extinguished by a vaccination program as was done with smallpox and polio.

Any timeframe for us getting a vaccine is little more than a guess as is the potential effectiveness and duration of the vaccine even if we do get it:

But damage to the economy of the world is a real problem too, that costs lives as well. We need to get the world back to work and it’s clear lockdowns will never accomplish that.

you guys realize we are just a bunch of grumpy Pilots arguing amongst ourselves. It took me 3 months to realize this.

Karen, and her husband, kids, etc, need to feel comfortable flying / travelling. She watches The View and gets health recommendations from Kim Kardashian, who she "respects for her voice as a successful woman." She manages the entire household, cutting her husband out. Sprinkler system inop ? she posts to the local neighborhood facebook group, asking for a handyman. Summer travel ? she hits the same facebook group, asking for ideas. 4th grade teacher did not spend enough one on one time with her daughter ? she hits the facebook group

She drives an Infiniti or Lexus full size SUV, wears a baseball cap with her hair coming out of the back of the hat to Starbucks, and texts as she backs out of her parking space at the grocery store. She is very busy and is all about uh, Karen.

Karen can afford airline travel, Disney tickets, ski trips to Colorado, and "sending the kids to Europe to get some culture."

It does not matter what political figures or authority figures say at this point, as 1) they have lost credibility, and 2) Karen "will make her own decision in regards to her family's health" because she is "empowered"

Convince Karen to fly again, and we are back on track.

As an aside, reaching the Karen voter will be critical this year.

The Great Influenza by John Barry is a good read.

Would recommend this to those on either side of this debate. Both sides may learn something valuable and it will dispel some of the confirmation bias folks have or are looking for on this thread.

This pandemic really showed how out of touch Americans are about the world. So out of touch that a global pandemic has turned into a conspiracy about the left to overthrow Trump. I guess you can call it dumb or maybe not well educated or openminded. I have my own theories. And I don’t think most Americans realize or care that the rest of the world is watching us and it’s an embarrassment, reinforcing every stereotype about the US. Some foreign corporations have already delayed business to the US until September due to the infection rates. Other countries listened and have nearly stopped new cases, even then I was surprised to find out that many only now or still haven’t opened like the US did literally almost six weeks ago. Remember the guidelines by the health officials was to only open anything when cases were down for two weeks at least. No state met those guidelines here in America guaranteeing prolonging this for a long time. All so the folks can finally eat in at their golden corals after their painful couple of weeks. There’s zero leadership.

Maybe you missed the part where I said 99.96% of us will be just fine? I'll correct my math.... 99.964% of us will be fine

Sometimes I have a difficult time deciding on reading this forum or going to an HOA meeting I don't belong to.
