A fair amount of these passengers aren’t your every day travelers ya’ll were hauling around. LAX airline reps agreed when asked (by me two days ago) how are your pax levels? A tad higher, but their concern was pre-pandemonium pax requirements/assistance at kiosks and baggage was far less. Three of the reps mentioned they help well over ten times the amount of folks at kiosks, claims and where security entry/gates are located. Probably low fare junkies coming out of the woodwork. I’m more inclined to think it’s folks down from the mountains, swamps, valleys, etc never having flown before. I can only validate as Tommy Boy garbage bag carry-ons are an actual thing now...
Hopefully domestic will climb a lot faster than it has - International will take years.
International is a ghost town. Didn’t see a soul at 0700 here at Narita, Japan. Not a one out of uniform.

Its not good. I was an optimist; however, now I’m inclined to believe air travel won’t return for quite some time. I hope a vaccine will help get us back to respectable levels, but I’m not even confident in that anymore. I’ve talked to many people who just don’t want to get into a tube filled with other people as long as Covid 19 is still a thing...mask or no mask. Also, I have several family members who work for tech companies and say they’re saving a ton of money by training people over zoom rather than fly them out. Possibly a 40% reduction in their business travel. Obviously my heart sank when hearing this. Nobody really knows what the future holds for us, but it’s hard to envision 2018 levels.

I think the predictions of a ramp up to 50% after the fear subsides followed by a 2-3 year slog to 2019 levels are reasonable. But even at those passenger counts the business/leisure mix is going to be skewed toward the less profitable direction.
