Hey guys and gals,
I'm looking for a little help on an upcoming flight across the Gulf. For flight planning purposes, I need to know what RNP level a single UNS 1K is capable of. The FMS manual is pretty vague and I have yet to call Universal. Also, when flying across the gulf, are VHF frequencies used, or HF? Thanks in advance.

How far across the gulf are you going? I actually just got a thick, in depth universal manual when I went through recurrent. Don't have time tonight but I will take a look and see if it says what RNP level it is.

We're pretty much going from BRO to CUN then south over land. That's the larger portion of our over water flight. Our destination is Belize City.

Thanks for looking Red.

Looks like at least RNP5, look at page 3 in the link for your FMS config.

Pokey,

You probably just want to call Universal. From the manual I have it really depends on what serial number you have and therefore there is no specific answer, at least not that I could find.

Red,
I've got Universal helping us out. They're who wanted that information so the can file us appropriately. I went ahead and faxed our aircraft spec sheet to them today.

Thanks for the help guys.

Please keep in mind it is not what the Universal is capable of that is important but what your Bravo is certified for when equipped with the Universal. See AFM supplements.

As an example...In a Beechjet, AMS 5000 systems are capable of RNP4 according to Collins, however the aircraft is not type certificated with an AFM Supplement that indicates RNP4 approval and you will be hard pressed to find an Avionics inspector that will give a Beechjet RNP 4 Approval until Hawker issues a revised AFM supplement stating RNP 4. This is particularly important with older type certificated airframes as some manufacturers such as Hawker are not keeping up with the changing Airspace system and will not define specific enroute RNP levels that were not in existence at the time.

In addition it should be noted that unless you have RNP 10 Authorization via LOA you should not indicate on an ICAO flight plan that you are RNP 10 capable even if your aircraft is as you don't have authorization to do so. See FAA Order 8400.12C for more information on obtaining that authorization if it is applicable to your route of flight in the GULF and aircraft capabilities.

For more information on Gulf of Mexico and RNP 10 you may want to look at the AIM Ch.4 Section 7. FYI if you need or would like to obtain that authorization it is fairly easy and quick depending on your FSDO.
