BeechJet Co-Captain Salary
#21
Yea, it is kind of touchy-feely. I have flown in corporate jobs in which the salary has been the same... switching seats every other leg. We considered the guy in the left seat the PIC for that leg. Its an arrangement to preserve egos. Ironically, its also the perfect platform for a clash of egos.

In 2001 I was a Beechjet captain, flying Part 91 for a law firm. I was paid $65K, and that was low compared to others I talked to around the FBOs. I was just furloughed from a major, however, and needed a job. I had no maintenance responsibilities. We had a mx contract. I think $90K sound about right if you are wearing both hats.

Some operations do use two PICs. Not really a nonsense term in all cases.
Some flight departments consist of exactly two pilots. If there is only one true PIC, then the whole operation would shut down if that one pilot was on vacation, sick, in training, etc.
If the operation has TWO PICs, then the operation usually has a day hire pilot fill the role of SIC so that the airplane can keep moving, and keep the overhead costs lower than having a seldom needed standby pilot.
This allows each full time pilot some off time without grounding the airplane.
As far as flight authority, that is traded between the two pilots on a day by day or leg by leg basis.
The two pilots involved must have a good working relationship for this kind of operation to go smoothly. That is why hires are often done on a known basis instead of off the street.

Sorry guys but it makes me sick sitting here and reading this. I know I'm preaching to the choir but you all need to get paid more $. You can make that kind of $ selling Fords down at your local dealership. I just can't believe that a company can buy a $10+ million jet and pay the people who are highly trained to keep them safe anything less than 6 figures. There needs to be a nation wide pilot walk out holding up the middle finger to all the cheap owners!
