Also, I did have to trim the soft end (external to ear canal) to prevent interference with the ear pads. Cheap and effective.
I did the same thing...but I bought a Sennheiser 25-KA off eBay for $300 less than two weeks off IOE. ANR is money VERY well spent for a professional pilot!

As for a cheap headset for primary flight training in pistons, hard to beat the $100 AvComm if price point is the #1 concern. I think the AvComm AC200 is pretty much the same headset as the ASA headset linked earlier in the thread. That said, you can't ever get your hearing back and ANR will drastically reduce your fatigue level. If you amortize the cost of an ANR headset like a Denali or Lightspeed 20XL over the course of the 250hrs required for a commercial license, it only adds a couple bucks per hour...a very good value in my opinion.

I like using earplugs.

Its a busy noisy environment and if someone is running an apu I always have my earplugs handy.

No point in taking off your fancy ANR headseat and get blasted buy ramp noise all the way into the FBO carrying someone's bag.

I like using earplugs, too.

I keep them in my pocket and put them in before leaving the plane/FBO for a noisy ramp.

Flying the airplane, I prefer a "fancy ANR headset" but to each their own

Default For what its worth..

Zyttocs,

Not sure if you are still in the market for a different headset as I'm replying late to this thread.
If your looking at the recommendation of clarity aloft (which is a very good choice), you might also look at the Halo Headsets by Quiet Technologies.
I use these every day for our jet and highly recommend them, plus they are about half the price of the CA's.
Best of luck.

I've had enough of the windshield anti-ice noise. I'm going back to carrying my Bose with me for our Cj2. It gets to the point that we have the volume turned almost all the way up just to hear ATC and each other with the windshield bleed on. It's bad. Thank God the Cj4 is going to have electric w/s heat.

How long do you have the windshields on?

Yeah it gets loud and I too turn the volume up when its on, but we typically only have them on in descent for anti/deicing or defogging...

Oh yeah, for anyone interested - I'm selling a roughly 5-year old Sennheiser 25KA in very good condition for $300...
