The ASA headsets in the link are the same model that we used for students who did not own their own headsets. I used a pair a handful of times. They are heavy, have a painful clamping action, and have little padding on the top portion that rests on the head. The mic pics up voice just fine. The sound quality from the headsets was fair.
I would not recommend these if you plan on flying for more than an hour or two at a time. If you plan on staying in aviation, invest in a headset that will last you AND keep flying enjoyable. If you're not sure if you are going to stay in aviation, continue renting a pair from the flight school until you know if you are going to stick with flying or not.

Just a quick heads up, the Lightspeed mach 1's will work with the clarity aloft ear tips! They slide right on, take a little bit of effort to position properly, but are more quiet than the blue foam things they come with.

In the noisy CRJ cockpit, I use a Telex 750 with earplugs. Some flt crew use standard foam/roll/insert type but I use the type for musicians. They have a very small canal incoporating a plastic diaphram. Most music/instrument stores keep them in stock. Also, I did have to trim the soft end (external to ear canal) to prevent interference with the ear pads. Cheap and effective.
