Same. When called out about it, veewan said he saw it on Facebook...
Typical game of telephone-I heard it from someone who heard it from someone who heard and saw it from someone non important. By the time it gets to us, its been distorted so much that you don't know the truth.
That said-I m firmly in the camp that he was well within his probationary period and did something stupid, and THAT was the grounds for termination and not leaving for Skywest. Plenty of people have made the move if you look at our attrition, and there hasn't been an outcry to the Union for help because they are making a lateral move and were terminated for it.

Anyway... I would still be interested to see what the stated reasons for being canned are.

30 former employees are getting calls today from the chief. Compass wants repayment for training costs from any pilot who did not complete 12 months of employment from end of training. They quoted me a bill of $8,000.

exactly. Not to mention failure to take personal responsibility for certain kinds of actions is a very human thing. I don't think I've met someone fired from a job who didn't claim the company was screwing them. Nothing against them... It's just how we are wired.

I get that unions protect workers and sometimess even incompetent ones, but no one else is curious if this actually happened the way that I've described it?
I might not have it exactly the way it went down since the information is second hand, but if my version has any truth wouldn't it be worth investigating? Maybe I'm wrong and it was just a bad apple. Until someone presents it in black and white with facts from a creditable source we'll never know.
I'm not sure ALPA will address this, especially if it was a one time event- plus they have other issues to handle. But it would give some people better faith in the union if this is true.
For those that doubt the company would do this, why didn't they get approval from the union for the new hire bonus? It seems like they (the company) do as they please and the union has to clean up afterwards.

Well of course they'll say they're being screwed, but why did ALPA help the guy unless he had a legitimate reason?

I don't know if it's for real but it sounds like desperation. There's no way they can enforce something like that without any contract. It sounds completely illegal. I hope nobody pays them anything! I'm a former Compass pilot, and I'm gettig uneasy when I hear stories from there recently. I still have a few friends in Compass and I hope they get out quickly. It used to be a good place, back with "old" Chief Pilots. After everyone had gone with the flow to Delta, they hired spineless company men. Don't expect to be backed by your chiefs nowadays. On the contrary, expect to be thrown under the bus. I heard stories from very reliable sources about management trying to fire people after they put in 2 weeks notice. Now this! They seem to be playing a dangerous game out of desperation. They keep forgetting how small this aviation world is, and how quickly information like that spreads. Soon they may not be able to find a single applicant even if they raise the 1st year pay to 60$/h. All these kind of shenanigans do is scare away potential newhires. It's unfortunate but I know I would not consider, or could sincerely recommend Compass to anyone nowadays.

Page 11-30 "17. Cost of Training
All new hire Pilots who are type rated pursuant to
subparagraph 11.V.16. above and subsequently resign
within twelve (12) months are responsible to reimburse the
Company for training costs associated with Pilot’s Initial
Training in the amount of twelve thousand dollars
($12,000.00). This amount will be prorated over the twelve
(12) months from completion of training at the rate of onetwelfth
(1/12) per month on payroll. A Pilot who resigns
following a Company announcement of a Pilot layoff which
(i) includes the Pilot, or (ii) the Pilot could reasonably
presume would include the Pilot, will not be required to
reimburse this cost."
