700 pilots 20 a month attrition suggests 17 months to hold upgrade, historically we are probably a little closer to 16-17 pilots a month attrition tho and then there are some pilots that got bypassed that are upgrading now so it's a little hard to tell how everything is going to go now.

With the Reserve numbers they way they are (especially copilots) one has to wonder if they will keep just 2 bases when MSP closes or maybe open a new base or two to balance out crews and flying. SLC or PHX seem the most logical.

PHX seems more logical. SLC is somewhat of a stretch. It makes sense to have bases in hubs or where there is MX. Although SLC is a DL hub, PHX gets DL and AA. So it could happen but I won't believe it until people can actively bid for any of the above.

The issue I think with PHX is that we would need new routes from there to open a base. Wouldn't make much sense to have a base that we only depart to 3 destinations (SEA, LAX, and SLC) and 2 of those are to bases (SEA, LAX). Not 100% sure if this is correct for routes. But who knows maybe Delta is planning to increase their presence in PHX while AA is shrinking ?

I know people might have been shocked to see an FO left Compass for Ameriflight, but I think it tells you that the reserve rules need to be improved. My thought is that person weighed the options of sitting reserve vs going and flying their tail off for more $. Sure 12 months on reserve is not long when you compare it historically- especially with recent memory of the lost decade, but in an era where folks can walk off IOE into a line elsewhere why would they delay their career? They came to build experience, not to get onto this seniority list for a permanent gig.

Well that's the tricky thing because you were hired during a time where there was no movement... But of course as long as we don't lose planes now the movement would continue so someone hired today in theory would have a shorter time on reserve and quicker upgrade. The math is what it is, the problem is always the assumptions in the math...

People who were in the August 2016 classes and are LAX based are getting buildup lines worth around 70 hours, so they are pretty close to full line status. If 13 months on property and still on RSV in LAX, then you're bidding wrong. MSP would be a different story....
