seems logical, $1000.00 bucks to get there 5 minutes earlier

Plan it at .80 and thats extra fuel when half the time you can't fly .80 anyways due to chop. Fly how you want and if times are too tight, block time needs to change. Don't know the last time I entered 270/.75 for descent when most arrivals are 280 in transition anyways.

Yes, so now you're carrying around extra gas to boot. If ground time in LA is on the average X number of minutes the block time should reflect that. And I got to believe they would if the same was happening at mainline. I'm pretty sure this will get addressed one way or another soon

Are FOs just skipping the post flight inspection in places like Vancouver and Calgary now? The latest change to the FOM says we're not allowed to go outside until we've cleared customs. I don't imagine you'd go all the way through customs, then go all the way back to the aircraft just to do a post flight.

When landing in the US, from places where we do not pre-clear.

It's not that big of a deal. We never could do comingin from Mexico. Plus the fact that we're one of a few airlines that require a post flight walk around when you're handing it off to another crew.

Its been years since I put 270kts in perf init decent. Why speed up for crossing restrictions, or bust all the 280kts til slowed by the STAR? Common sense says 280kts. Being super early I put slower speeds, late or go-home faster. We don't do cost index of econ speeds, but it's not too hard to get close to what it would by applying some basic reasoning in a given situation instead of flying rote numbers.

The 270 was in there for power idle descents, right. You're still supposed to do 280 like the STAR at a power idle descent but have it set 270 for better autothrottle management/idle. In practice, nobody does power idle descent, most people do a power on descent.

I do power idle descents, works fine as long as you plan to have time to slow before the fix and dont neglect your scan and SA so you dont miss a restriction.
3.7 degrees + .1 for every 10knots headwind, -.1 for every 10 knots tailwind. Works great! At higher speeds like .80 or 300kias+ the speed tends to want to runaway on you so I personally shallow it out .2 or so to cope with that. Wont be able to slow without boards or a level off prior to a fix though. So you have to build that in. Works great cuz its easy going into places like MOT, MSN, DSM etc, where you have a no frills descent until 10k. Places like MDW, LAX and the like you have to work more in the box with the level offs but that takes 2 seconds.
Saves a couple hundred lbs of gas.

I hate seeing a .76 cruise at 350 or 360 with 700 lbs of contingency fuel. There is just no room to make a little up if anything doesn't go according to plan. A good example is SEA-DEN. If SEA is departing north, most of that 700 is gone before you ever get pointed in the right direction, and then they always file the south arrival into Denver. If they are landing north, that's another 50 miles or more. It gets skinny real quick. At least at .80 you can slow up and make it work.
