It sucks when people do that. I've literally been standing near the gate hoping to get the Jumpseat and I overhear someone saying, I'm positive spaced but I can take the Jumpseat if it helps get another revenue passenger on.

And as far as DH's introducing themselves... It's just a completely unnecessary conversation! Don't thank me for the ride, I had nothing to do with it! I was never consulted about whether or not I wanted you here, I didn't personally book your ticket or anyone else's, and I don't care where you're sitting. Even if I'm not busy - I'd rather be on my phone killing brain cells than making meaningless "pilot talk" with someone I'll never see again.

That is the lowest of the low. I can't stand people that try to help do everyone else's job, especially in situations such as this when their "generous offer" to take the jumpseat comes at the expense of another pilot getting home or to work. Not to mention they get nothing out of it besides an opportunity to pat themselves on the back and smile to themselves and think, "Wow. I must be a really good guy." How are people really that oblivious?? I would CERTAINLY hope, though, that captains don't put up with nonsense like that or at the very least, are making sure that someone else isn't getting bumped from the jumpseat.

I'd just like to add that when I'm using jumpseat privileges and the gate agent gives me a seat in the back I always stop up front and ask for a ride. I sometimes feel like it's a burden for both parties, but that's the requirement.

You guys are hitting on some excellent points. I hope that the people that do these kinds of things are taking note.

I bet you guys fume the entire flight after some DH pokes their head in there just to say thanks. And if they don't you call the gate agent down to verify that pilot in the back is actually a DH and not a jumpseater who didn't check in when you spot them .

Or you could just use it as an opportunity to be a respectful human being and converse with another pilot for 30 seconds. God knows I need a break from entering flight plans and briefing things that have been briefed 1,000 times already. As long as a checklist isn't interrupted, who cares if a fellow airline pilot says 'thank you'?

Holy crap, will some of you relax for a second? So what if somone on a DH comes in and says Hello? Get off your high Captain horses for 30 seconds and say hello back. It's a fellow professional acting friendly and thankful towards you, all you gotta do is take 5 seconds to return that courtesy. Jeez Louise - I have no issues with anyone wanting to come up and say Hello, no matter how they're coded on the ticket.
