Compass Updates - Saga Continues

what happen to the plan of having the mechanics pre-flight the airplane for the first flight of the day?
twice in the last 2 weeks I did a first flight of the day and there were problems that would easily have been seen by doing a simple power up check. both ended up causing 1 hr delays, which means most of the rest of the flights for that day on that airplane were probably delayed. That is what is probably causing a large % of the poor performance numbers.
would be interesting to see the stats for how many delayed flights were only because the previous flight was delayed earlier in the day.

If you cant keep mechanics or don't have enough of them because you can't pay them the onus is on Delta to pay up. It's their problem not CP's.

The sad thing is that this not a new concept. 20 years ago when I was turning wrenches at UAL, the first bank of flights for the day were called STAR flights or Start The Airline Right. As a line mechanic I had at least one sometimes two gates I was responsible for. The A/C was powered up, checked for EICAS messages and a clean log book or any other mechanical issue that would delay the flight.

So I just read that you have to use a TSO headset below FL180. Does this mean I cannot use my Bose QC 15 w/Uflymike??

Ours says the same thing. I've always used my QC 15 and Uflymike and only one person has ever called me out on it. I guess it would depend on how persnickety the check airmen are at Compass

Rog, I remember too when I ordered it that theres some way to make it TSO approved with some other kind of wiring or something, but I've long since lost that info. Maybe somebody on here knows......

Nobody has ever once mentioned my headset and nobody out of the dozens of people with whom I have flown that use the headset (myself included) ever wear the ear buds. You're fine.

The TSO'd version is the same headset, except they also provide a pair of ear buds that you are supposed to plug into the headphone jack on the mic so that if the battery dies in the headphones you still have a headset you can use to both speak and hear.

You are famillar with the the Fee for Departure model right? Delta says we have X amount of block that we need covered by a regional and put that out to bid. Regional Y wins the bid for Z amount of dollars and thats all they get, one pot of money to operate Regional Y and no more. All of your overhead comes out of that pot except in most cases fuel. Wages for every employee from CEO to the most junior F/A and everyone in between come out of that pot. Money to hire mechaincs, how many and what you can pay them comes out of that pot of dollars. See my point yet? Republics bankruptcy is a perfect example. They coundn't sustain operations at the rate Delta et al was paying so through bankruptcy they were able to negotiate higher rates for each departure. Compass is not being paid enough by Delta to hire enough mechanics and/or pay them enough to stick around to cover the needs of an aging fleet. In essence though, anyone who works for a FFD carrier is indirectly on the mainline carriers payroll. This is Delta's problem pure and simple, hell they are the ones who own the damn airplanes and they are the only ones who can fix it.
