They have that altitude separation Incase you overshoot final. Not that anyone would ever do that though!

Lol I hate that too. "Compass 6099 expedite descent to 2600ft, report reaching wake turbulence of 757" I think my goodness, is there a maximum vectoring altitude? what's the problem!?

Goodness, guys! It's used for separation for guys on the straight in for 25L! I just always tell them each time they slow me down "we'll slow, but is it okay if we're high?" 99.99% of the time they'll say "approved" and then just hit FLCH, dial in the slower speed and sit back and relax as the airplane first slows down while going above the VNAV path. Then you're coming down at your nice slow speed as fast as the airplane will allow in that configuration. Hard to hit wake turbulence on the arrival when you're above the guy in front of you.
As for the base-to-final turn following someone who's a straight-in in front of you, it's just a matter of situational awareness. You can see him visually or on TCAS (I haven't seen a plane where TCAS was MEL'd... yet) . Worst case scenario, you hit the red button on the yoke and show everyone else on board those sweet flying skills you've honed over the years.

I guess we're just gonna ride out the summer and hope to be staffed for fall and beyond. Seems like we did skip a class in July because if I remember right we only did one for July 11th and have 2 for August so that would've given us an extra 6-8 captains in the future.

Not just email. Nothing like a phone call @0530 from scheduling for a junior man while out of country on a much deserved leisure trip . Shove your jm where the sun doesn't shine, thanks. I don't know how this place even stays in business anymore.

That was my exact thought when they tried to JM me into a 7th day... and the scheduler actually had a hard time understanding why I was refusing to accept the assignment and had to talk to her manager for clarification.
