If you submit for a referral bonus, do you get any kind of feedback that they received the paperwork, or whether it was approved or anything?

I'm just paranoid because of all the disclaimers that say you're screwed if you don't get it in on time.

God help our pilots if our training departments start making all 12 month LOEs night visuals. We'd all dequal, jeeze.

You do not. It’s all up to you to keep in touch with the person you referred to determine the next step.

No I understand that part. I know its up to me to keep track of when they complete IOE, etc etc to submit the follow up forms. But I was just wondering, when I actually email the form in, do I get any kind of feedback like "yes we received your form."

If only the training department wouldn't teach people to blindly dial in the FAF altitude as soon as they hear "cleared for the visual" even when you're not on an established segment of the approach.

Speaking of the training department and dequal-ing, I almost dequaled at my last 12 month because I didn't slow to Vapp before crossing the FAF (and was instead doing 170 to JETSA as ATC has you do into LAX). Had MM yelling at me that I needed to be at Vapp by the FAF (not 1000') and if I wasn't that it was considered "unstable" an automatic go around.

Also got into a rather vigorous discussion with him about the way FPA works, too, but that's for another time.

If this was the case, especially if it came down to you dequaling, I would send an email to BW or someone in the training department because that is absolutely incorrect and it’s scary that EXAMINERS don’t know that...

As for dialing in the FAF when cleared for the visual, I do it. I just don’t press FLCH to get there. FPA it and use the vertical profile or even GS to set myself up for it. Works great.

I don't know if I would have dequaled about it, but he was very heavily debriefing it despite my (and my FO) protesting that it's not the way it works (and making us repeat the maneuver because we hadn't done it satisfactorily). But I'm smart enough to know when to pick my battles so I went along with his way and he was much happier. I'll play "make believe" in the sim once a year if that's what it takes (although I'd much rather spend sim time doing things that are more accurate to the real world and emergency scenarios that are really useful when flying the sim).

And you're 100% right on dialing in a lower altitude. It's just how much guys will dive to get down there right away rather than thinking about it. I've had to also explain to guys going into LAX that they might not need to use the boards and FLCH to come slamming down to 1900' when they're 20 miles out since that might take you outside the Bravo airspace (I got a bit of a thousand yard stare from my FO when I mentioned that one as he was doing it). Obviously there were no terrain issues, but I also know firsthand just how much traffic is outside the LAX Bravo airspace firsthand and didn't feel like getting multiple RAs off the GA airplanes and helicopters down there.

The more I fly the plane, the more I appreciate FPA mode. That is all.
