The other interesting predicament that we are getting into, is since we are already hiring captains right out of first officer training, the deeper we go down the list means the longer the captain upgrade footprint will take. For first officers starting upgrade class before finishing their first officer foot print, means they will more than likely need more time than a upgrade that is already done with first officer OE.
If they need 30 new captains by August 1st, then having a June 29th class date won't cut it for someone who needs to get a majority of the new hire and upgrade training complete. We could be falling farther behind on the staffing in the coming months.

So....It's a good idea to take a guy who has his 1000 SIC in a 1900 or a Saab or any other airplane really, no previous PIC, and no experience with our way of doing things, and toss him out there with a restricted ATP FO fresh off of a Cessna to deal with all of the mess that is LAX? It might be what we are forced to do to continue to operate, but it is in no way a desirable solution from a safety standpoint. It is not prohibited by law or contract, but that does not make it good.

No street captains yet.. I finished IOE 3 weeks ago.. and still have 50 plus numbers to Captain.. and fell further away in the July 1 bid, meaning bypass FO's are now taking the upgrade. This is fact and don't read all the gossip.. no street captains and don't worry several of my class mates and other classes have 5 plus years at 121 carriers.. some even have 121 PIC experience.

How realistic is it to hold SEA out of new hire training? How many months could one expect to be on reserve in LAX before they could get back to Seattle?

So, you didn't slide backwards. Upgrade is still ripping down the seniority list. More than half the awarded CAs are newer hire FOs. And out of the 50 numbers, how many have the upgrade times? Don't be surprised to see your name on the next award!!

And the company said SEA will continue to grow over the next few vacancies.

About 1 month of reserve in LAX. If you're the junior guy in your class you might have a buildup line the next month, so don't expect a lengthy time on reserve. As far as getting back to Seattle, i'd say it may take a few months. I don't know who the most junior SEA FO is right now, but I know they're pretty junior (possibly still in class).

First, I didn't offer any solution. I was only saying that I am not on the "Street captains are awesome" bandwagon. As you pointed out, some guys are essentially going directly to the left seat training after finishing right seat training. That guy will have his hands very full dealing with a challenging LAX operation, brand new flight attendants, brand new MX people and everything else that is going on right now, and they will likely not have an experienced F/O to lean on a little bit when things get challenging. Instead, they will have a new guy that will make every rookie mistake in the book, and they will not have had a chance to learn from those same mistakes with the guidance of someone more experienced on their left before taking command. A couple hundred hours in the right seat with us before they upgrade would make a big difference in their preparation for the responsibility. I understand that mandating right seat time before upgrade is not so realistic right now with our growth and attrition, but I do think that it is hard to argue that it is not safer to do it that way.

I have, and am still considering, Compass for the LAX base (short commute for me). I have heard upgrades are very fast. I have the time, sic and pic PIC 121, and thought, should I apply and get hired, the upgrade would be an attractor (yes, livable $). But honestly, I would not be so comfortable to go through FO training and then immediately go into upgrade training without flying the airplane for 1-2 months as an FO and getting to know the company. Or, it would be fine with me if the company provided extensive PIC IOE of similar duration (1-2 months). But I seriously doubt they have the resources to provide this.
