Delta/NWA/Compass/DCI/etc. carriers in ORF
#12
Well this wasn't what I wanted to read. I had always had very good luck commuting out of ORF. I go to DTW though so it has always been on Northwest. I have been out on workman's comp since the beginning of February and haven't seen it since the merger. I am finally getting cleared to go back to work in two weeks and will start the commute again. Was kinda hoping things weren't going to get more difficult.
Are any of the old Northwest agents still around??? They always treated us great.

Just a word, your gate agents in ORF are leaving jumpseaters behind.
In the past month I have been left behind twice by Delta (Delta Global I think.....) gate agents. Both times were a bit tight but within reason.
The first time I was told the flight was closed and would not be re-opened, even though I was about 8 or 9 minutes prior to STD. And the lady took a 10 minute delay anyway because she had no clue what she was doing. I stood in the window the whole time. Nearly 20 minutes from the time I showed up until the time the door closed and I was denied.
The second time was two days ago and the last reasonable flight out of ORF going home. ORF sucks to commute out of and anytime after 1600 you are in trouble. It was a Chatauqua flight to CVG and she denied me saying it was "Weight and Balance" issues. I don't doubt the ERJ-145 has issues but I also know most crews look out for each other and can make it work.
This was 12 minutes prior to STD.
Just be aware that the gate agents in ORF have a serious attitude issue going on and jumpseaters are being denied. Both times I had to wait until the next day to get home. Please, Please, Please, check the gate for folks. I understand the need to be on time but don't believe the gate agents if they tell you there are no jumpseaters. I always check personally if the flight is marginally fully.
ORF is a nightmare and folks are being denied at the gate. Just be aware.

I know that they are under no obligation, but when I stand there and the door of the aircraft is still open for 15-20 minutes after I arrive, you'd think they could get it done.
The last flight out to really get home on at a reasonable hour leaves at about 16:50. It is not a commuter friendly domicile and I am not really there by choice. Got displaced. Happy to have my position, but ORF is tough for commuters.
Anyway, I am not leaving it that close by design. But you've always got to try. When I have a choice I am always at the gate at least 30 prior and normally 45 or more.

Welcome to the DAL nightmare! It's not only ORF, it happens at many DAL gates at different airports. One example I posted here before was at JFK. I finished a flight, my girlfriend (an FA) checked us both in with the gate for our trip home. She boarded and I was hauling butt from terminal 2 to terminal 3. She left my ticket with the gate agent. I ran to the gate and the gate agent was on the phone (14 minutes prior). I politely waited for her to finish her call. When she finished, she told me the flight was closed. I asked why and explained that she knew I was coming. She said it was 10 prior (which it now was). I explained that I had been standing in front of her for 4 minutes while she was on the phone and her reply was "Well, there's nothing I can do." ***! I was ****ed and did not really care what she did so I told her "Fine, I'll go to B6 where they give a F about employees!" and walked off. When I got to the Jet Blue terminal and looked at the screen, I realized AA had a flight in 40 minutes. So, back to the airtrain, over to T9. Got a JS pass, went to gate and boarded. Texted my girlfriend that we were pushing. Her reply "WE ARE STILL AT THE GATE!" 50 minutes later and they were still at the gate! I beat her home and had to wait for her flight to land.

Of course, this is not the only reason that I stated that Delta sucks. Just look at how they operate and how they treat their regional carriers. Look at their scheduling. Look at how they came out of bankruptcy and gave the CEO a huge bonus "for emerging from bankruptcy"! And then, how they wasted more money coming up with a new logo and painting all the planes. If you came out of personal bankruptcy, would you spend money like they did right off the bat? Then the merger with NWA, another huge bonus to the CEO's? Look at everything together and you will see...DELTA SUCKS.

I don't want to make assumptions, but perhaps you have not experienced T2 at JFK. Im a big DL fan, but that place is enough to drive anyone mad. I can certainly understand his frustration. In general, it seems that gate agents really don't understand how the whole jumpseat process is supposed to work. We depend on it to get back and forth to work and home and some either really don't understand or don't care.
