1. When doing the ILS, it was tune the localizer, hit PREV then dial in the inbound course, when cleared hit APP, look for the white LOC/GS, when GS captured set the missed approach altitude.
2. Doing a LOC only, it was go green needles, tune the localizer, when cleared hit NAV, look for the white LOC, break the altitude if flying FPA in lieu of a step-down, etc.
That was all outside the FAF. Wasn't till I was on the line that I saw alternatives that gave me smooth captures.

New here, thought I'd introduce myself.
Fresh out of the schoolhouse and got a line after a month of reserve. Every crew I've flown with has been awesome--no bitter lifers, no tools. I swear I flew with a CA who could have been Jeff Spicoli, totally cool.
Not perfect by a long shot, but the guys and gals here make life muy tolerable.
And my seniority went up 9%, woohoo!

If you mean selecting APP (arming LOC/GS) when cleared for the ILS approach, then it's coming from the sims for new hires:

Haha yeah, its training. Flyin over the great plains of sim land fuel is free, nobody's behind you, and you are always #1. It works when you're new to the plane and fully configured at GS intercept. Then you get to the line and we're yelling at rampers out the window spitting popcorn as we talk trying to drop the brake because the headsets dont work, while the FO is making paper airplanes out of the release because we forgot to hand it out and we're trying to "land the plane" on the GA's hands clasped open trying to catch it in the wind! Hitting taxiway Charlie cement dips at 27kts trying to log extra landings yelling "yahoo! Shake n bake baby!"
And then we takeoff...

I just got my third full month of reserve! Haven’t even got my 100hrs yet. I was looking forward to being busy when we completed training. I only flew 6 days last month.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m trying not to complain. Sitting at home playing with the kids while getting paid to be on reserve ain’t all that bad!
