Hey Everyone,
I have an upcoming interview with CommutAir and was wondering what the forum thinks about the future of CommutAir once the Continental/United merger is complete? Is CommutAir going strong in this economy? Do you think United would get rid of a small subsidiary like CommutAir and allow Republic or Go Jet to come in and take over the routes?
May be a stupid or non-sense question but just wanted to see what everyone thought?
Thanks

JMO but 50 seat jets are on the way out. When you can move the same amount of people for less than half the gas with minimal time difference, it's far more cost effective to run turboprops on the same routes. CommutAir (and Colgan, Piedmont, etc.) fill a niche with turboprop flying on routes that are to short or thin to support mainline airplanes. Continited doesn't have extra planes laying around to serve CLE-CVG or EWR-PVD with a 737.
Though the company is going nowhere quick, hiring is continuing and movement is constant.
Several question marks do still remain. The leases on our Q200s (from Horizon) run out in 2012. The airplanes are ragged out thanks to our lovely company and the rumor is Horizon won't be renewing the leases. Of course, that's subject to change. There are the never-ending rumor of more Q300s coming, but zero hard evidence for it from anyone.
Obviously if the Q200s go without a replacement, the company would probably close up shop. You'd like to think someone around here has thought that through, but it's doubtful.
If you were coming here I'd say it's a steady company to come to. We're a private company so financials are not available, but we don't hear the doom and gloom like you hear from many of the other regionals lately. It's a small company, first name basis with most everyone, with a lot of great crews who stick together since we're all equally screwed. It's not a bad place to spend a couple of years to get some TPIC and move on as long as you keep your eye on the goal and watch your license.

I think it's a well known fact that Horizon doesn't want Q200s back in their system, and it doesn't seem to be a hugely popular frame on the used market. Frankly I don't see anyone besides us wanting them for another few years.
The one common thing we hear is that Horizon is sick of leasing them, so who knows, maybe JS will make a good cash offer on them and take them all off Horizon's hands for good.
Ideally we could get rid of them and be all Q300 since it's 13 more passengers for the same crew and virtually the same fuel burn. The Q300 is a pig performance wise but it's much better weight wise on both short and long legs.
I wouldn't worry about coming here and being on the street in a few months.

Not sure, I think it's mid-summer. But everyone management wise seems to be positive about them renewing, but Horizon every once and a while has people come take pictures and review the logbooks.
