While a tad bit out of date, UAL did not provide a hotel during new hire Grd Schl back in 93.I was hired by a well respected national airline in '94 and had to buy my own hotel during training.(though they did at least pay me during training)
Midway, DC-9,MD-80,B-737 operator in the 80's, did provide a hotel, but you were at 40hrs minimum wage until done with training. (minimum wage ...believe it or not)
I had a job offer from a DC-9 cargo/charter operator at the same time I had one from C5. The charter outfit didn't pay for hotel after the first week and only 600/month per diem while in training. While not the only factor, it was part of my decision for C5.
In short, no hotel during training used to be quite common....I would assume it still is.

On a side note we all had to bid more hours this bid and they suspended an upgrade class because we're understaffed so badly on the FO side (and more and more on the captain side). Two different training department people have told me in the last two weeks that they were expecting to work solid training until at least June for new hires, FWIW.

Remember it's not her only job, so don't get antsy if it's not tomorrow, but I'd expect her to be back at it this week for a February 13th class I'd imagine.

That's great about all the news of upcoming hiring. What are the normal training numbers consisted of? 1, 2 classes of month? 8-12 pilots?

I can tell you that the last guy in the April 2011 class and the first guy in the May 2011 class are the middle of the FO list right now. Pretty damn quick movement.

The Nov 29 class was 7 and the December class was 6.
Not sure if 8 people got the invite for Dec and only 6 showed, but that's what it was. 8 people started for the Nov class, 7 are left.
