A former instructor there ought to know, instead of having to guess.
The 777 makes stops according to the locations and needs of the client, not because it's restricted by distance from land. If a customer wants to be picked up here and dropped there, then that's what the customer gets.
I used to do 45 minute flights in a large, widebody airplane with very long range capability; lots of cycles. Why? That's what the customer wanted and was willing to pay for it. I did 3-hour flights for years using a different large, widebody airplane with very long range. Again, that was the job. Pick up here, take there. If the customer has a need for a given lift capacity and needs to fly on a shorter route than the maximum range of the airplane, then the customer gets that.
180 minute ETOPS isn't very limiting, most places in the world. Would 240 offer much more?

Despite the hard work of many involved here ATSG has made it known they do not value their labor groups. That’s status quo for a parent company more obsessed with aircraft management than airline. It’s a pretty simple solution, pay us. Improve the retirement package. It’s not some big secret what most want here. And sadly by asking for mediation when they did combined with retaining their new legal team it’s obvious they have zero intentions of doing anything positive. At least we don’t have to deal with that tool AL anymore.

Very glad AL is gone. That guy was a snake in the grass.

If it is who I think, it would explain a lot, and makes sense now. Myself and at least 5 other 76 or 77 instructors were interviewed and eventually hired by him via video interview (Zoom or Teams) He is a little long winded and chatty, and I had to step away for a few minutes. Anyway, apparently during the couple minutes I was away he said some things about the union..I never heard them. I was told 3 others accepted the job. One that turned it down was a friend who lives in another city, that was 76/77 qualified like me.
My friend asked me a couple weeks later why I accepted the offer considering AL remarks about the union. Since I hadn’t heard them myself, I decided to press on and figure things out myself, when I got there. Turns out I may have been the proverbial sucker in the card game, until I did figure it out on day three and left. . Well, maybe the one guy who did stay was the ultimate sucker. My friend told me AL wanted to get the training department away from the union, and keep them out.
After what I experienced my first two days, I emailed AL and explained that I would not be used as a lever against the union and let me know now if that was his intention. I went further to explain that I didn’t think he would be successful . He didn’t answer, and judging from what I saw, that was his intent, so I left.
A couple weeks later, someone I know who has experience with several MIA 36th street operators, said that he thought the guy was from 36th street. The reputation of most of those is very anti-union.
So, if he is that guy, it answered some things I had wondered about.

I’ll tell you why, since you asked so nicely.
