Competition at Memphis International Airport heats up
Lots of flights have been added in the last week or so.
Northwest Airlines Corp. this summer will offer additional non-stop flights from Memphis to Las Vegas and Orlando, Fla., as well as increase capacity on its flights to Denver.
The Monday announcement comes less than a week after Denver-based Frontier Airlines (NYSE: FRNT) entered the Memphis market with non-stop flights to the same destinations.
Following Frontier's announcement, Atlanta-based AirTran (NYSE: AAI) added last week a non-stop flight from Memphis to Orlando.
NWA will now operate a total of two daily flights to Las Vegas and four to Orlando. The airline will operate larger aircraft on its three daily flights to Denver.
NWA (Pink Sheets: NWACQ), which has a 50-gate hub at Memphis International Airport and more than 200 daily flights, is also adding a second daily flight between Memphis and Seattle in June.
