That's good news - I hope this push for ICAO harmonization doesn't include criminalization. Seems to be more of this in the news lately. BTW, is the Almaty flight a turn or layover?

I think right now it's a fuel stop. Crews layover, but I don't think they sort any freight just gas, new crew and go. Great layover by the way if you are not in jail. I think they plan on sorting freight at some point not sure if they have started that yet.

Generally speaking, it's easier to raise public awareness about issues of public concern by discussing them in public.

Do you have a better idea?

I agree with Tony C that this is an issue that affects all pilots flying outside the US. I'd urge everyone to respect personal and company privacy and NOT post details.

The fact that were pilots detained should get everyone's attention. I hope this would cause pilots to be aware, and maybe even become advocates for change before they find themselves a long way from home and in need of legal assistance.

Jack's most recent FCIF makes more sense now.

Let's see, weather at mins, hmmmm, go around and head for the alternate, Bishkeck, where we have no services, no layover hotel and no way to even get or pay for gas, and sit on the plane for hours under armed guard, then house arrest in a hotel and then wait for another 24 hrs while FDX and the State Dept negotiate your departure, or shoot the approach in Alamaty and spend a night in the Alamaty hooch? Tough decision!

I had no idea what you were talking about, so I searched the FCIFs. I presume now you were referring to a MD-11/10 FCIF entitled "Kazakhstan Operations" issued 02/09/07?

Interesting indeed.
