I wasn't quite on property in 1997 during the Teamster strike. I think many of us saw the CGN strike as a wake up call that NURPs aren't just theoretical but are actually scabs. Their efforts won't make too much of a difference in the event of a strike, but if they cross our picket line there would be no debating what they are doing.

I don't really have a dog in this particular fight. But I've been curious what's a NURP? Some kind of management pilot at UPS?

A NURP is a Non Union Replacement Pilot. These are individuals that UPS has hired as "management pilots". Most of them have no management skill, experience, or qualifications. They climb over the backs of IPA first officers for instant captain status. They don't have any work rules except the FAR's and are expected to fly in the event of a strike. To the best of my knowledge, in the history of the UPS airline not a single IPA captain has ever accepted a "promotion" into management.

Luck? No luck required sonny. Not one IPA pilot crossed their legally established picket lines. UPS management went berserk, but couldn't and didn't do a thing. As mentioned before, there's an article in the UPS-IPA contract prohibiting the company from in any way sanctioning a IPA pilot for not crossing a legally (as it was in CGN) established picket line anywhere in the world. Those of us here at the time did the same thing in 1997 on behalf of the Teamsters during their strike.

I guess FDX ALPA doesn't have a similar clause in their CBA, because a FDX 777 operated CGN-MEM during the CGN strike. Given their contract is settled, and assuming they don't have the same contractual protections, I see a difference, albeit disappointing.

Correct guess.

FedEx ALPA advised pilots to make sure the crew is safe. I guess the picket line has to block the entrance to the FedEx ramp to have any effect.


Very disappointing.

That's correct. We have no contractual protection in that regard.
