Right now though, your days here start at 0300 and end at 0300. There are more and more trips starting at other times too but the best commutable ones are these. Basically, I take an ABX flight that gets to CVG at around 0130. Eat and chill for a bit, then go to work at my show time. So far I've only needed 2 nights in a hotel in the past 2 months.

Your ABX flight cancels or maintenance delay and you miss your show time? No probl. There's a nice commuter clause and you basically have to make the day up.

It's also nice if you live in a city that we go to, because chances are good that you will be able to overnight in your own bed. I was lucky enough to get a line this month and most of my overnights are at home. It's not always gonna happen like that but your chances are good.

Good luck in the interview.
Thanks for the info. I'd probably move to within a 4 hour drive of CVG (BNA area or even up towards LEX) and enjoy the quiet drive up there, I hope my days of jumpseating to work are over for this lifetime. How are the trips? Are you gone for weeks at a time or can you get more of a 4-6 on 4-6 off type schedule? I have a 5 year old and another on the way so I don't know if I could do 14 days away at a time but 6 would be doable. Right now I do anywhere from a 2-4 day trip a week so wondering how a jr line would compare to what I do now.

The trips vary and it's really hard to say what you would end up with as far as lines go. I got my 4th choice line which probably should have gone to someone about 6 to 10 numbers above me. It seems everyone bids all over the place depending on what they are looking for that month. For instance, I bid based on the least amount of work and how many overnights at my home.

Some trips are 17 on, some are 7 on and some are 5 on and so forth. I think if you move somewhat local, you'll have a pretty good life. I for instance have 2 9 day trips with nice blocks of days off between them.

If you want a pay check come to ABX, if you want quality of life go elsewhere. Two new hires quit recently. My own personal experience - in the last four weeks I've been home for four days- mandatory overtime until more pilots are trained. Reserves are required to "call in" at the end of assignment, that's when your emergency replacement assignment (junior man, mandatory overtime) occurs.

Actually everyone is required to call in at the end of a flight. The pay is really good! QOL not so much unless you manage the junior manning. But hey they're hiring a bunch of people!

I thought they could only JRM you x number of days per year? This is a bit disheartening to hear....

Nope. Your vacation is the only hard days off you have. (Well, except when you call fatigued.) You are fair game beyond that.

However, after 6 junior man days, they have to give you a day back one for one that they take. (There is an exception here for reserve line holders. Reserves can be used into the first day of a block of time off once each month and that day doesn't count towards the 6.)

What percent of ABX flying is during the day and is that likely to increase with the Amazon deal?

Don't plan on that EVER changing. ABX runs as lean as possible on crews; always have, always will.

Define daytime flying. Oh is that what you do after you have been up all night? Then I would say 50 percent.
