Not sure I would agree this is "starting an airline"..... sounds to me like ATI/ABX will be the airline.... with leased planes...

Interesting that the agreement to operate planes is 5 years, but the leases on the actual planes will be 5-7 years.

Does ATSG have 20 767s available to use for this, or will have to source planes on the market or pull down DHL ops to cover it?

I think there might be 767 freighters out there. I have a buddy who ferries 767s to a company that converts 767 passenger airplanes to freighters.

I wonder who is going to do the hiring. ABX or ATI? Both?
Be interesting to see when/if they start ramping up.

767-200s on 5 year lease
767-300s on 7 year lease

5 currently operating

7 from AC being returned from other ACMI gigs

Purchasing 8 more -300s

Fully deployed by 4Q 2017 (If I recall correctly from the call)

Boeing is getting serious about building 767's again. The 767 line is mixed with the 747 line in Everett. I can see them phasing out the 747-8 soonish.

From another poster, on another website:

The move to 20 is official
http://www.seattletimes.com/business...cargo-network/

"It's official. Giant retailer Amazon now has its own air cargo delivery operation. After running a secretive trial since last summer leasing five Boeing 767s from freight carrier Air Transport Services Group (ATSG) out of Wilmington, Ohio, Amazon has agreed to let ATSG run a dedicated air cargo network and expand the operation to 20 widebody cargo jets."

"There's been speculation that as Amazon invests more in transportation it might do away with third-party carriers Fedex and UPS, and perhaps even emerge as a competitor to those companies by providing transportation services itself. But in a recent earnings call a top Amazon executive said that the company sought to complement those services, not replace them."

"ATSG's shares closed Tuesday at $11.77 but jumped nearly 20 percent on the Amazon news to more than $14 per share in early trading Wednesday"
