The other way is to get your 4 year degree and join the military to get your flight training.
It's even more important to not have any infractions with the law, but a military career is about a lot more than flying, and is the most assured way to get the best training, and then move on to flying for a major airline.
I would also explore the Guard and Reserve, but before you do any if this, get your 4 year degree and get good grades.

First things first, there's no desperation at UPS, FedEx or any legacy carrier for pilots.
Secondly, you could always pursue a guard/reserve flying gig and have a regular job that pays the bills. There are many ways to make a career in aviation. It all depends on what type of career you want and what sacrifices you'll make to make it happen. Keep asking questions and getting opinions.

Most of those "pilot shortage" stories are being propagated by pilot training schools and airline managers.
Having said that - IF you decide to go for it I wish you luck. Follow Huck's advice. It's spot on!

Pretty good advice already given. Aviation is growing hugely worldwide. There will be jobs, don't know how well they will pay though. Get a good degree (something you can fall back on) from a good University. You are still young, plenty of time to have fun but don't knock anybody up and don't get any kind of alcohol violation or vehicle violation. Get into military aviation if you can. I did not but it opened doors for many of my colleagues. (One guy I know is on General track! ) Furloughs?, they have alternate careers/benefits/retirements to fall back on.
Best of luck!

CDFA is the California Department of Agriculture, she has to inspect fedex and ups planes to search for a bug called the Japanese beetle which could wreak havoc on our crops if spread from the east coast to the west coast. From this she talks to a lot of UPS and FedEx pilots because it's part of her job. However, I agree Hucks points were excellent and I would definitely follow those first. I have been doing research and now see that UPS furloughs and has been doing it lately. thanks for the reply

Huck, thanks for the reply. Everyone else's comments on the feed agree that your advice was the best. Although I don't think I will be going into aviation as a career, I will use that advice if I go into aviation. Thanks! 😎
