It was planned almost 15 yrs ago (10yrs of legal battle in the Triad trying to prevent it) as a relief for EWR overflow - no more room for growth in EWR. It opened in '09, pretty much as the economy bottomed out and our domestic system has pretty much flat growth since then, plus FedEx shifting much to Ground. There about 3-4 wide bodies there most days - MEM, IND and BQN. In the mean time, it sits there "idling", and ready, if needed.

There is a good bit of cargo from other cities that is also trucked into & consolidated at GSO on the weekends (ie --- there is no longer an RDU-MEM flight on Sundays, as that freight moves thru GSO)
I believe there is also a relatively large FEDEX ground hub in nearby Kernersville, NC --- and some inbound/outbound GSO freight moves between these two facilities, which may not be transparent to everyone
In total, I believe there are 8 operational aircraft gates --- though they are rarely (if ever) full
